MetaMask is facing fresh questions about its future after Consensys launched a new institutional settlement network targeting banks, asset managers and financial market infrastructure providers.

The announcement puts Consensys’ institutional ambitions in the spotlight just weeks before its planned separation from MetaMask. The move could also leave the popular wallet competing independently while its former parent pursues Wall Street.

Consensys unveiled Sovereign Network Interoperability at Devcon, introducing infrastructure designed to coordinate transactions across independently operated financial networks. Can MetaMask maintain its position as institutional blockchain adoption accelerates?

Consensys Turns Toward Wall Street

The new Sovereign Network Interoperability platform aims to help institutions settle securities, exchange currencies, and move collateral across separate blockchain networks.

Its bridgeless design keeps assets on their original ledgers while coordinating transactions between approved counterparties. Consensys says the system uses cryptographic verification to reduce reliance on additional trusted intermediaries.

The platform targets four major financial workflows, including securities settlement, wholesale payments, collateral mobility, and tokenized fund transactions.

Consensys plans to support Ethereum-compatible networks and protocols such as the Ethereum Economic Zone and Inter-Blockchain Communication. Canton connectivity is also planned.

The launch builds on Consensys’ existing institutional infrastructure, including Linea, Hyperledger Besu and Teku. The company is positioning itself as a technology provider for financial institutions seeking private, always-on blockchain settlement.

MetaMask Faces an Independent Future

The institutional launch arrives as Consensys prepares to separate its consumer and enterprise operations into two companies.

Under the September restructuring plan, Consensys Software Inc. will rebrand as MetaMask, with Joe Lubin serving as chairman and CEO. The protocols and institutional infrastructure business will move into a newly formed company retaining the Consensys name. The separation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

MetaMask will focus on consumer finance, expanding beyond its traditional wallet functions into payments, savings, trading and access to financial instruments.

The company has reported more than 100 million downloads across approximately 190 countries. Its Money Account product also signals an ambition to become a self-custodial financial platform.

Still, the split creates uncertainty around how resources, intellectual property and shared development capabilities will be allocated.

Consensys has not disclosed separate revenue figures, financing arrangements or detailed asset allocations for the two businesses. This leaves MetaMask facing a strategic challenge. It must continue developing its consumer platform while Consensys builds infrastructure aimed at some of crypto’s largest potential customers.

Could Bitcoin Layer 2 Networks Enter the Settlement Race?

The institutional settlement push also highlights a potential opportunity for Bitcoin Layer 2 projects seeking to expand beyond payments and decentralized finance.

Bitcoin Hyper is one project positioning itself around this idea, combining a Bitcoin Layer 2 design with a wallet and an execution environment intended to support faster transactions and applications.

Its longer-term opportunity could extend into settlement infrastructure if the network develops the security, interoperability, and compliance features institutions require.

The project has raised more than $33.2 million in its presale, with HYPER priced at just $0.0136. It also offers 35% staking rewards, while the planned network uses a canonical BTC bridge, transaction batching, and zero-knowledge proofs to settle Layer 2 activity back to Bitcoin.

Bitcoin Hyper is also developing a wallet and broader application ecosystem. Its testnet explorer is live, with additional wallet, bridge, and staking features listed among upcoming milestones. The token launch has been announced for November 26, and exchange listings and full network rollout are planned.

If Bitcoin Hyper can deliver reliable BTC transfers, secure settlement, and applications suited to financial institutions, its infrastructure could eventually compete for use cases now being developed on Ethereum-compatible networks.

That would put Bitcoin Layer 2 projects in a different conversation, not simply as faster payment rails for retail users, but as potential infrastructure for tokenized assets and cross-network settlement.
